Nature breathes life into our cities. As part of a new campaign to highlight the importance of urban nature to our everyday lives, C40 has invited mayors, artists, cultural influencers and other thought leaders from cities around the world to write a ‘Letter to Nature’.

Read what Mayor of Auckland Phil Goff has to say about nature in his city:

“As Mayor of Auckland, protecting and enhancing our region’s beautiful natural environment is a top priority.

Auckland is blessed with three harbours, 3200 kilometres of coastline, 48 maunga (volcanic cones), over 50 Hauraki Gulf islands and more than 4,000 parks and reserves.

From our iconic kauri trees in the Waitakere Ranges to the regenerating population of endangered kokako birds in the Hunua Ranges, Aucklanders love and want to protect our natural treasures.

I’m proud that with the support of Aucklanders we have introduced new funding mechanisms to accelerate the clean-up of our beaches, streams and harbours, and to protect our native species from pests, predators and introduced species. We have also increased Council support for thousands of Aucklanders’ volunteer efforts, such as tree planting and restoration initiatives.”
